A Critique of the Behavioural Theories of Learning

A CRITIQUE OF THE BEHAVIOURAL THEORIES OF LEARNING One of the most debated issues in psychology pertains to the nature and meaning of learning. The systematic study of learning is relatively new as it was in the late nineteenth century that studies in this realm began in a scientific manner. Psychologists borrowed techniques from the physical sciences, and conducted experiments to understand how people and animals learn. Psychologists have tried in the past to define and explain how learning takes place. Two of the most important early researchers were Ivan Pavlov and Edward Thorndike. Among later researchers, B. F. Skinner was important for his studies of the relationship between behaviour and consequences. They are also known†¦show more content†¦They found as reported by Myers D.G, that half a second works well. However if the food i.e. the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) appeared before the bell, the conditioned stimulus (CS), then conditioning is not likely to occur. The bell signals the arrival of food. Pavlov calle d this the law of contiguity: The closer the two are in time (with neutral stimulus preceding presentation of UCS), the stronger the conditioning (generally speaking) Extinction. This concept is similar to common sense idea of forgetting. Pavlov found that when he sounded the tone repeatedly without presenting food, the dog’s salivation also decreased. After the conditioning phase, the conditioned response (CR) gets weaker when the conditioned stimulus (CS) or the bell is not accompanied by the UCS (food). It gets weaker not because the organism no longer remembers the UCS-CS connection. It gets weaker because CR is somehow inhibited. Spontaneous recovery. After extinction trials, the dog will start to salivate again in response to CS after only one pairing of UCS and CS. Pavlov called it spontaneous recovery, where the weakened conditioned response reappeared after a rest pause. This according to Pavlov occurred because extinction was suppressing the conditioned response and not eliminating it. (Myers D.G. p 295) Generalization. This fear was generalized as five days later he showed fear to a white rabbit, a dog, and a sealskin coat but not to objects dissimilar to a rat. Limitations Of Classical Conditioning The main criticism raised against classical conditioning is that it does not give importance to inner feelings, thoughts, desires and motives. It is called reductionist as it reduces behaviour to stimulus and response. Another criticism of behaviourism is that it tends to be mechanistic. This means we merely respond to our environment, and have no control over it. It is also disapproved of, as it is alleged to be deterministic (Keegan, G.). This means the approach believes we passively respond to stimuli in our environment. We have little free will, or exercise of control over our environment, or the objects, events, and people within it.Show MoreRelatedA Critique of the Behavioural Theories of Learning4629 Words   |  19 PagesA CRITIQUE OF THE BEHAVIOURAL THEORIES OF LEARNING One of the most debated issues in psychology pertains to the nature and meaning of learning. Cartoons Land Of Imagination Essay Example For Students

Cartoons: Land Of Imagination Essay Cartoons: Land of ImaginationJust as Moses climbed Mount Sinai to receive the ten commands, thefollowing are the ten laws that govern my most interesting place. 1. Any bodysuspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation. 2. Any body in motion will tend to remain in motion until solid matter intervenessuddenly. 3. Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforationconforming to its perimeter. 4. The time required for an object to fall twentystories is greater than or equal to the time it takes for whoever knocked it offthe ledge to spiral down twenty flights to attempt to capture it unbroken. 5. All principles of gravity are negated by fear. 6. As speed increases, objectscan be in several places at once. 7. Certain bodies can pass through solidwalls painted to resemble tunnel entrances; others cannot. 8. Any violentrearrangement of feline matter is impermanent. 9. Everything falls faster thanan anvil. 10. For every vengeance there is an equal and opposite revengeance. These laws are the laws of the Cartoon Universe. The Cartoon Universe is not a tangible substance, rather an explorationinto imagination. It is this facet that makes this universe more appealing thanour own. One is free to create and manipulate not only the physical actions ofa character, but the mental behavior as well. If my recollection serves mecorrect, aside from hypnosis, there is nowhere else that this is possible. Inthe cartoon world, anything goes. There are no boundaries to which one isconfined. With a little ingenuity and imagination one can create a place orbeing that has never existed before. Scribble, scribble, squeak, squeak, the colored pencils glideeffortlessly over the white canvas. A dab of golden yellow, a speck of sky blue. Within several minutes I have create my ideal woman. Blond hair, blue eyes, wearing a tight fitting black mini-skirt. Perfect in appearance and poise, andnothing but words of encouragement and love linger in her black caption. For araging hormonal man of eighteen, this scenario is a dream come true. Cartoons, however are not just a group of characters jumping off cliffs, and getting shotout of cannons. On the contrary, cartoons often have incredible meaning. With the recent presidential elections, many cartoons have been inventedrepresenting the two current candidates: Bill Clinton and Bob Dole. Politicalsatire, although often humorous, is meant to convey a message to the reader. The cartoonist has cleverly transposed his own thoughts, into that of hischaracters. Many environmental issues have been tackled as well. Captain Planet, is an environmental superhero with supernatural powers, the combination of the Planeteers powers magnified. Each character representsa different force of nature: earth, fire, wind, water, and heart. He also canbecome any one of these forces. However, if Captain Planet is exposed topollutants: acid rain, toxic, waste, smog, etc., his powers are temporarilyweakened, and he must return to Earth to recharge. Each episode is designedto confront an environmental problem. The five characters, each equipped witha ring, bane together in times of trouble. By placing their rings next to eachother, Captain Planet appears. Captain Planet, using the powers of the fiveindividuals, swarms around the earth correcting problems when needed. Although, this is a far fetch from reality, there is truth to it. What this cartoonrepresents is, aside from the fact that we must keep out environment sound foreverything living, is that it is very difficult to solve a problem alone, butwith team-work often it is easy. Just as Captain Planet represents the evilsinflicted by selfish human beings, the Jetsons explore this in a differentmanner. .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 , .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .postImageUrl , .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 , .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:hover , .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:visited , .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:active { border:0!important; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:active , .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14 .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u61c1421d43e11aac40c728769182bf14:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A Modest Proposal Response PaperThe Jetsons a futuristic cartoon, represent what life may be like. Journey Of The Magi Essays - Literature, Gospel Of Matthew, Poetry

Journey Of The Magi The Magi are a class of Zoroastrian priests in ancient Media and Persia. The three Magi are traveling to Bethlehem to pay homage to Jesus Christ. As they make their way toward the saviour they begin to learn that the world around them has become full of corruption. Slowly, after time, the wise men realize that a death from this materialistic world is the only way to be born into the Kingdom of paradise. In his poem "Journey of the Magi," T.S. Eliot takes us, the reader, on a physical and spiritual journey by the use of several poetic devices; form and structure, the use of sound, engagement of the senses and figurative language. Eliot uses the form and structure of the poem to enforce the mythic construct of a physical and spiritual journey. He separates the poem into three sections or stanzas. First innocence: Spiritually and physically, the Magi have no idea of the hardships that a journey to praise the baby Jesus, will entail. To their alarm they begin to see the disgusting state that their world is in. Second the fall: The wise men separate themselves from the rest of their society. However, they have high expectations that the birth of Christ will be grandeur and when they arrive, they do not expect the birth to be so humble. Thirdly, there is redemption: One of the wise men seems to be reflecting on the events that passed. The Magus is finally able to understand the paradox that one must leave this world in order to be born into true utopia. This structure of a classical journey strengthens Eliot's spiritual and physical journey of the Magi. The use of sound is quite effectively employed by Eliot. By using assonance and repetition he produces an emotional moving poem. There are no harsh sounding lines. They all flow softly together. "The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces, / And the silken girls bring sherbet" (9-10). This is just one example of assonance. The poem is full of soft slurred sentences. The flowing of the poem is in accordance with the structure of the poem as a journey being continuous. The third section is especially full of repetition which creates a bit of a choppy effect and leads to the Magus realizing the moral of the poem. And I would do it again, but set down This set down This: were we led all that way for Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly, We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death, But had thought they were different; this Birth was Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death. (33-39) The repetition of the words ?set down', birth and death, emphasizes the meaning behind those words and how they apply to the journey of the Magi. Being in the redemption stanza, this helps bring the whole journey into perspective spiritually. A poet can evoke certain emotions just by using a skilled combination of words. T.S. Eliot uses the engagement of the senses to help us experience the physical journey of the wise men. He employs a great deal of synesthesia to make his poem more compelling. "And the silken girls bringing sherbet" (10). He combines the senses of tactile and gustatory. The ?silken girls' give a feeling of soft, smooth fabrics and the ?sherbet' a cold drink after long, arduous day. "Then the camel men cursing and grumbling/ And running away, and wanting their liquor and women" (11-12). He combines the auditory and visual senses. He wants the reader to be able to hear the crude camel men spewing vulgarities and the visual image of the immoral men and women. "Then we came to a tavern with vine leaves over the lintel, / Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver, / And the feet kicking the empty wine-skins" (26-28). There is a visual image of leaves over the lintel and also a visual image of all the drinking and gambling taking place. He definitely creates a kinesthetic feeling with the ?hands dicing' and the motion of ?feet kicking'. By using synesthesia Eliot produces a vivid understanding of the wise men's journey. Finally Eliot uses figurative language to help us experience the spiritual journey the wise men take. He utilizes biblical allusions and symbolism to make the experience more meaningful. "And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow" (25). This use of symbolism can be interpreted in various different ways. The horse

Architecture Definition Includes Construction & Design

Architecture Definition Includes Construction & Design What is architecture?  The word architecture can have many meanings. Architecture can be both an art and a science, a process and a result, and both an idea and a reality. People often use the words architecture and design interchangeably, which naturally broadens the definition of architecture. If you can design your own career goals, arent you the architect of your own life?  It seems there are no easy answers, so we explore and debate the many definitions of architecture, design, and what architects and social scientists call the built environment. Definitions of Architecture Some people think architecture is like pornography - you know it when you see it. Everyone may have an opinion and an elegant (or self-serving) definition for architecture. From the Latin word architectura, the word we use describes the job of an architect. The ancient Greek arkhitekton was the chief builder or master technician of all craftsmen and artisans. So, what comes first, the architect or the architecture?   architecture 1. The art and science of designing and building structures, or large groups of structures, in keeping with aesthetic and functional criteria. 2. Structures built in accordance with such principles.- Dictionary of Architecture and Construction Architecture is the scientific art of making structure express ideas. Architecture is the triumph of human imagination over materials, methods, and men to put man into possession of his own earth. Architecture is mans great sense of himself embodied in a world of his own making. It may rise as high in quality only as its source because great art is great life. - Frank Lloyd Wright, from the Architectural Forum, May 1930 It is about creating buildings and spaces that inspire us, that help us do our jobs, that bring us together, and that become, at their best, works of art that we can move through and live in. And in the end, that is why architecture can be considered the most democratic of art forms. - 2011, President Barack Obama, Pritzker Architecture Prize Ceremony Speech Depending on the context, the word architecture can refer to any man-made building or structure, like a tower or monument; a man-made building or structure that is important, large, or highly creative; a carefully designed object, such as a chair, a spoon, or a tea kettle; a design for a large area such as a city, town, park, or landscaped gardens; the art or science of designing and building buildings, structures, objects, and outdoor spaces; a building style, method, or process; a plan for organizing space; elegant engineering; the planned design of any kind of system; a systematic arrangement of information or ideas; and the flow of information on a web page. Tensil Architecture at Denver International Airport. George Rose/Getty Images (cropped) Art, Architecture, and Design In 2005, the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude implemented an idea, an art installation in New York City called  The Gates in Central Park. Thousands of bright orange gates were placed throughout Central Park, the great landscape architecture of Frederick Law Olmsted, erected as designed by the artistic team. Of course, The Gates is art, because what else would it be? wrote art critic Peter Schjeldahl at the time. Art used to mean paintings and statues. Now it means practically anything human-made that is unclassifiable otherwise. The New York Times was more pragmatic in their review called Enough About Gates as Art; Lets Talk About That Price Tag. So, if a man-made design cant be classified, it must be art. But if its very, very expensive to create, how can it be simply art? Depending on your perspective, you might use the word architecture to describe any number of things. Which of these items might be called architecture - a circus tent; a sports stadium; an egg carton; a roller coaster; a log cabin; a skyscraper; a computer program; a temporary summer pavilion; a political campaign; a bonfire; a parking garage; an airport, bridge, train station, or your house? The list could go on forever. The Architecture of the Car Park, 2010, by Herzog de Meuron, 1111 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida. Roger Kisby/Getty Images What Does Architectural Mean? The adjective architectural can describe anything related to architecture and building design. Examples are abundant, including architectural drawings; architectural design; architectural styles; architectural modeling; architectural details; architectural engineering; architectural software; architectural historian or architectural history; architectural research; architectural evolution; architectural studies; architectural heritage; architectural traditions; architectural antiquities and architectural salvage; architectural lighting; architectural products; architectural investigation. Also, the word architectural can describe objects that have a strong shape or beautiful lines - an architectural vase; an architectural sculpture; an architectural rock formation; architectural drapery. Perhaps it is this use of the word architectural that has muddied the waters of defining architecture. When Does a Building Become Architecture? The land is the simplest form of architecture, wrote American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), implying that the built environment is not exclusively man-made. If true, are the birds and the bees and all builders of natural habitats considered architects - and are their structures architecture? Architect and journalist Roger K. Lewis (b. 1941) writes that societies tend to value most a structure that transcends service or functional performance and that are more than mere buildings. Great architecture, writes Lewis, has always represented more than responsible construction or durable shelter. Artfulness of form and artistry of building have long been the dominant standards for measuring the extent to which human made artifacts are transformed from the profane to the sacred. Frank Lloyd Wright claims that this artistry and beauty can only come from the human spirit. Mere building may not know spirit at all, Wright wrote in 1937. And it is well to say that the spirit of the thing is the essential life of that thing because it is truth. To Wrights thinking, a beaver dam, a beehive, and a birds nest may be beautiful, lower forms of architecture, but the great fact is this - architecture is simply a higher type and expression of nature by way of human nature where human beings are concerned. The spirit of man enters into all, making of the whole a godlike reflection of himself as creator. Apple Headquarters Designed by Norman Foster in Cupertino, California. We work bone-deep in Art - drawing lines between sculpture, poetry, music and science that coalesce in Architecture. Since the licensing of architects, these professionals have defined themselves and what they do. This hasnt stopped anyone and everyone else from having an opinion with no one architecture definition. Sources Gutheim, Frederick ed.
